Closing the Caribbean Plastic Tap
Data- driven solutions
The Closing the Caribbean Plastic Tap Project is a three-year initiative to reduce plastic waste and pollution in the Caribbean. In partnership with the Waste Recycling Environment Network (WREN), Searious Business will focus on quantifying plastic waste, analyzing material flow in key sectors, and assessing partnerships for plastic waste reduction in St. Kitts and Nevis and St. Vincent and the Grenadines.
PROJECT
GOALS
Identify and implement solutions for recyclable polymers in project countries
Determine best pathway for non-recyclable polymers
Advance policy/legislative actions for effective management of plastics and plastic waste at national and regional levels
Improve and disseminate knowledge of the plastic footprint of each country
OUR ROLE
Our role involves conducting plastic waste data mapping and flow analysis for St. Kitts and Nevis and St. Vincent and the Grenadines to identify key waste streams and challenges. We collaborate with stakeholders to assess partnerships and develop actionable solutions, create sustainable business models for plastic reduction and reuse, support policy reform and legislative development, and organize workshops to share insights and promote collaboration across sectors.
PLASTIC ON ISLANDS
Plastic waste, particularly single-use plastics, threatens marine ecosystems, with 80% coming from land-based sources. Islands face the challenge of both washed-up debris and locally generated waste. Non-recyclable plastics accumulate, causing environmental harm. This project tackles this by turning waste into viable products, creating jobs, and empowering communities—especially women and youth—for a sustainable economy.
The "Closing the Caribbean Plastic Tap" project builds on the success of the earlier "Plastic Waste-Free Islands" (PWFI) project, which concluded in 2023 with the publication of our Blueprint. The PWFI initiative focused on promoting circular economies and addressing plastic waste in SIDS. Through policy reforms, business development, and community engagement, the project aims for systemic change in waste management, driving circular economy practices that create long-term benefits for both people and the planet.
